While not a true species this fish fights well and can attain 30 lbs. It is a sterile cross breed of a female Striped Bass and a male White Bass. It is a schooling species that feeds largely on minnows, especially herrings, shiners, and shad, though is it often stocked to control stunted sunfish. It prefers the same waters as white bass and freshwater striped bass and is best pursued in Early Spring and Late Fall. It prefers 65-75 degree F water and will readily hit lures. Look for large schools of gizzard shad in the 1"-4" range and this fish will not be far behind, and use lures and baits that imitate these small shad. Use 8lb-10lb class gear, as the usual size is around 2lbs., with occasional fish much larger.
